SEO Growth Rates On The Rise

Part 1 – Yellow Pages Are Dead.  SEO Rises from the Ashes.

Obituary:  the once beloved yellow pages have passed away in 2010. Cause of death: Internet search engines.  Gone the way of the buggy whip, the big yellow book has found nirvana in the afterlife as doorstops and recycled paper. Oh they may still print a few of the big books, but they’re really just for Internet holdouts and people at phone booths in remote areas.   In a related story, print advertising, also close to giving up the ghost is in the throes of death gurgles, although it may resuscitate with CPR and a niche role in the advertising world.

Given the untimely demise of the big book, people now find products and services through Internet search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing.  Using search engines is faster than clumsily flipping through those cumbersome yellow pages and getting black ink all over your fingertips.  Search engines are also more effective in terms of finding gobs of useful information.  And there’s no junk mail to pile up and throw away.

And so enters the golden age of SEO, search engine optimization, the Holy Grail, the darling of the Internet marketing community! Like the mythical Phoenix of ancient Greek lore, SEO is rising from the ashes of the yellow pages and print advertising.

However SEO is not quite a household word yet. We did an informal survey and asked people if they knew what SEO is.  Then we asked them if they know what Paris Hilton is.  Guess who came out on top.  10-4, copy that.  Even in 2010 I find myself frequently explaining what SEO is to people, but not what Paris Hilton is.

Oh yeah, they usually get the basic concept (of SEO that is, not Paris Hilton) when I explain it to them. “It gets your website to the top page of Google.”  Ok, that’s great, but the real issue is when business owners still don’t understand why it is important for their business. Google, schmoogle, why should I care?

I was recently was speaking with a startup business owner client about his advertising campaign.  I had written the content for his website and was aware that he considered the website to be very important to his business because wisely he wanted his URL on all his print advertising. Now bear in mind that this business has no physical location.

He said that he wanted to mail out postcards and distribute flyers.  I knew that he had a healthy advertising budget, and being a marketing guy, well naturally I recommended that we also start a search engine optimization campaign for his website.  He understood what SEO is: “yeah, it makes people find your website”. But online advertising (SEO) just wasn’t important to him. It wasn’t that he didn’t have the budget, or didn’t want to give the work to me. His mind was fixed on postcards and flyers. That’s where his priority was.

Fine, no skin off of my back but let me get this out there right now.  Putting up a website, but then not promoting it online is like opening a store, but then not hanging out a sign!  No one will find your store or your website!  Whew, I feel better! This is especially true for a virtual business that has no physical location like his.

Now this is an intelligent dude who owns other extremely successful businesses, all old-school.  What boggled my mind is that he knew it was important to have a website, and he knew that you need to work to get people to go to your site, but he couldn’t see the value of Internet marketing.  I had seen this condition before in my SEO practice at Hollywood-Seo.com:  a debilitating malady that I call SEO mental block!    After much perplexing I determined in myself to make it my life’s mission to discover a cure for SEO mental block. I searched high and low, on search engines of course. Finally my quest proved fortuitous as I stumbled upon a discovery.

SEO Growth Rates On The Rise – Part 2

Part -2  If Everybody Jumped Off the SEO Bridge – Wisdom from Mom

In Part 1 – (Yellow Pages Are Dead.  SEO Rises from the Ashes). I went on a quest to find a cure for a debilitating condition called SEO mental block. After trekking through the deepest, darkest jungles and across parched desert lands, (virtually of course), at last I found the cure for SEO mental block. And so I’m revealing it here gratis for the benefit of all humanity.  We must remove the blockage by showing the victim that everybody is doing SEO.   You see you can get anybody to do anything if you can just convince them that everybody is doing it and that they are going to miss out on those wondrous delights if they don’t do it too.

You don’t believe me?  Ok, when you were a teenager and your mother told you that you couldn’t do something, what did you say?  Of course you said “everybody is doing it”.   It’s the universal justifier. Not to be outdone, your mother countered quickly and decisively with the wisdom of the ages and profound logic that would make even Mr. Spock green with envy.   She knew she had you when she said “if everybody was jumping off the bridge would you do it too?” But did that change your mind? Of course not!  “Everybody is doing it” is the most potent reason for doing anything on earth, more powerful than wisdom or logic.

So in my dedication to rid the entire world of that insidious SEO mental block, below are a few statistics that you can use to free the minds of even the most stalwart print ad devotees and set them on the path to SEO enlightenment.

A recent survey of U.S. small business owners confirms that SEO and social media marketing are gaining acceptance. The FedEx Office Signs of the Times Small Business Survey polled 500 small business owners across the USA in early April. When asked how they plan to grow their businesses in 2010, social media was one of the few methods that gained when compared to the 2009 survey.

The survey shows that 36% of respondents listed social media in their plans for business growth in 2010, compared to 24% in 2009.

In another study by SEMPO (Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization) Search marketing doubled from $5.8 billion in 2005 to $12.2 billion in 2007, and will double again to $25.2 billion in 2011.

Search engine marketing spending wildly exceeded projections in 2007 and, based on survey responses the search marketing industry will exhibit continued healthy growth.

A major finding is that search marketing spending is increasing at the expense of print magazine advertising, website development and other marketing functions, as marketers essentially shift the portions of their spending pie, following consumers as they increasingly rely on search engines to conduct pre-purchase research.

Here are some key findings:

  • The North American search engine marketing industry grew from $9.4 billion in 2006 to $12.2 billion in 2007, exceeding earlier projections of $11.5 billion for 2007.
  • North American SEM spending is now projected to grow to $25.2 billion in 2011, up significantly from the $18.6 billion forecast a year ago.
  • Marketers are finding more search dollars by shifting budget from print magazine spending, website development, direct mail and other marketing programs to search engine optimization, Internet marketing,  search marketing, etc.
  • Paid placement captured 87.4% of 2007 spending; organic SEO, 10.5%; paid inclusion, .07%, and technology investment, 1.4%.

The survey showed a significant increase in North American search engine marketing spending projections from $18.6 billion to $25.2 billion. The drivers behind this higher estimate are advertiser demand, rising costs of keywords and pay-per-click campaigns, an increase in the number of small-to-midsized businesses using search engine marketing, greater consumer participation in search and increased interest in targeting, such as behavioral and demographic targeting of searchers.

So here’s the good news, not only can people rid their minds of SEO mental block, they can likely be the first person on their block to get to the top page of Google!  Bottom line, if you don’t want to go the way of the buggy whip, then it’s time to start seriously promoting your website online through natural, organic SEO and search engine marketing.
