Making Perfumes: Simple vs. Complex Blends
Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson are just a few hot shot celebrities making a name in the business of making perfumes. Their collections are actually a few of the top perfumes being sold worldwide. This billion dollar industry is indeed ripe for the picking and just about anybody can make a name for them self as long as one is able to make perfumes that are truly unique and special.
Celebrity perfumes are not the only ones making splashes in the industry. Well before the influx of stars started releasing perfumes big name designer brands like Calvin Klein and Escada had been and continue to release top perfumes which are major hits to the perfume consuming public. Any new perfume released by brands of this class literally flies off the shelves.
Contrary to popular belief, making perfumes of your own can be quite an easy process to undertake. In its simplest form, scents are made by combining fragrant essential oils, fixatives and solvents to give off a certain smell. The fixatives used can be natural or made up of synthetic substances that are used to control the evaporation rates of the fast disappearing notes in a fragrance. Effective fixation will make the scent last long on the body when worn.
In order to make perfumes, one needs to always remember that a good blend is made up of three notes. The fragrant notes of a perfume are the top, middle and base notes.
Also known as the head note, the top note is the initial scent one is subjected to upon spraying a perfume and is usually the one that disappear the fastest. It forms the initial impression one gets of the perfume, hence is immediately the most important selling point factor of a fragrance.
Once the top note evaporates, the middle or heart note comes into play. Appearing a few moments before the top notes disappear, the middle note is the main body of the perfume and usually rounds out a blend and often refines and suppresses the sometimes heavy impression the base note might give.
The base note is usually the longest and most enduring fragrance note among the three. Both the base and middle notes placed together form the main theme of the perfume. While the middle offers the heart of the scent, the base, in turn, bring depth and solidity to it.
All three notes affect each other in some way. For instance, the top and middle notes are affected by what one uses as the base. Miss out one of the notes and although your blend might still smell good, it will still be missing something. Every note has a job to do and should be allowed to do it.
Getting the combination of the fragrance notes in a perfume right is very important whether you are making a simple or complex blend. When properly made, a fragrance will work with the wearer’s body chemistry, right from when you first spray it on to its dry down stage; when it mellows out while still lingering on the body.
No matter their fragrance classification, all the top perfumes being sold all over the world have one thing in common; how their scent are creatively combined in such a way that they are able to captivate and entice the consumer with their appealing scents.
A perfume can be a simple, basic blend, with only a few ingredients used in it and still be absolutely beautiful. It can also be very complex, containing a highly diverse but complimentary number of ingredients which might be a combination of natural essential oils and manmade fragrance oils. Whatever type of blend one chooses, it is important to understand that achieving a superb result should be what aims for.
Making perfumes for either personal use or financial gain can indeed be a wonderful activity. Just remember to follow the guidelines and you’re all set to create your own mind-blowing concoction.
