The New Hemline of Party Outfits
The last time we saw the midi (that’s mid-length skirt, for you fashion dummies) was the early 2000s. Cameron Diaz and Gwyneth Paltrow wore them low slung, their hip bones protruding as they sashayed down the red carpet, looking effortlessly glamorous.
Desperate to look the same, we paired our chain-store versions with strappy, kitten-heeled sandals and lycra cowl-neck singlets. Those skirts were our party outfits, our daywear and our office wear. Even our taffeta cocktail dresses were midi length, coming just to the knee or below it.
So what happened? Where did all the midi lengths go?
They were replaced with the miniskirt – on steroids. This micro skirt was so short that it was often mistaken for a belt. Legs now had to be fake tanned all the way up. There was no more stopping at the knee.
And let’s not forget the waxing. One needed a Brazilian to wear the sort of skirts beloved by party girl heiress Paris Hilton and her ilk.
For six long years, we had our legs out, and even the boho trend didn’t influence hemlines much. Herve Leger created his infamous bandage dress in 2008, and for the next three years, svelte celebrities poured themselves into outfits that restricted natural human activities.
At first we sighed with envy, then we got bored.
It had to happen some time or other, so the midi came back. Fashion has gone ladylike. No longer the naughty young minx hanging out at the mall, it is now married with children and living in the suburbs.
The 2011 midi pays homage to that mood, harking back to the 60s and early 70s.
Glaswegian designer Jonathan Saunders must take some of the credit for our newfound love of everything midi. His winter 2010 collection, full of midi-length skirts and dresses with brave prints in silk and leather, had us sold.
Then came Prada, Preen and Celine; Carolina Herrera, Fendi, and Armani; even Herve Leger Bandage Dress dropped his hemline. But let’s not forget the monogrammed master Louis Vuitton.
For winter 2010, the full skirts came out. It was a 60s fashion reunion, with waspish waists, full-circle skirts and balcony bodices.
It didn’t stop there. Although designer Marc Jacobs lifted the hemlines slightly in the resort collection, lengths still came to just before or at the knee.
Although the vibe this time was more 70s than 60s, it was still grown up.
Fresh upholstery-style florals mixed with crisp nautical stripes, and skirts were worn both full-circle and A-line.
Prada channelled the 60s dollybird for winter 2011 in heavy wool dresses, pleated skirts and drop-waist coats.
Slightly mad art teachers were present at Fendi, with Mary Jane shoes, coloured woollen tights that sagged slightly and buttoned-up blouses.
Shift dresses in knit fabric and classic A-line skirts stopped right at the knee. Colours were strong and contrasting, in ochre red, royal blue, mustard yellow and mushroomy tweed.
